Laurence F. Muhammad is a lifelong gardener, horticulturist, educator and advocate for food sovereignty and food independence. Born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut, he began gardening at the age of six.
At thirteen he trained in horticulture, beekeeping, composting and practical gardening under Ms. Jill Barrett of the Knox Park Foundation. A 1984 graduate of Weaver High School, he attended Virginia State University on a four-year trade scholarship, and in 2011 graduated from Milwaukee’s Growing Power Urban Agricultural Program.
A 35-year member of the Nation of Islam and a member of its Ministry of Agriculture, Laurence is committed to growing food, teaching others and making agriculture accessible, with or without land.
